My Open Letter to Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova: Taken in 2004 – nearly 8 years since her first major win, she is showing the same desire to win again on her weakest surface

Dear Maria,

Last year I had picked you to go all the way and complete your career slam with your maiden French Open title. Little did I know that an inspired Li Na had other thoughts about who would win your Semi-Final.

If Serena cannot win it, you’re my pick to win. What I admire about you is despite the fact that you are the richest woman in sports today, you have shown considerable desire and mental fortitude to work your way back from a near-career ending injury to being a few matches away from winning this title. Any slam at this point would mean so much, but I did not believe you would have another shot, and you’ve shown that your finals appearance at Wimbledon and the recent Australian were no flukes.

Remember, pressure is a privilege and I hope now that you no longer have to face Serena that you are freed up to focus on adding the French to your trophy case.
